From 12 minutes to 3: Dubai’s new bridge takes shape
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with Shamal Holding, has completed 90 percent of a major bridge project providing direct access between Sheikh Zayed Road and Dubai Harbour.
The 1,500-metre bridge, featuring two lanes in each direction and a capacity of 6,000 vehicles per hour, is designed to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity to one of Dubai’s key waterfront destinations. Once operational, it will reduce travel time between Sheikh Zayed Road and Dubai Harbour from 12 minutes to just three minutes.
Construction work has progressed rapidly, with 1,400 engineers and workers involved across 12 teams, recording over 4.2 million work hours. The project has used more than 45,000 cubic metres of concrete and 8,273 tonnes of steel, while maintaining a zero lost-time injury record.
The bridge will open in phases, with traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Dubai Harbour expected to begin in June. A second phase in July will enable movement from Dubai Harbour towards Al Naseem Street and connect to key intersections including King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street.
RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer said the project supports Dubai’s vision for integrated infrastructure and improved mobility, while describing it as a model of public-private partnership. Shamal Holding highlighted the bridge’s role in strengthening Dubai Harbour’s growth as a major seafront destination.
Once fully operational, the bridge and associated intersection upgrades are expected to significantly improve traffic flow and accessibility across the Dubai Harbour area.
